Research published by the American Psychological Association confirms that people tend to steer clear of information that would contradict their own personal belief or opinion. In fact people are twice as likely to choose information that supports their point of view.

When you are buying a house, it will be important for you to do just the opposite of what is normal. You believe have found the perfect home, the home where you are able to visualize yourself and/or your loved ones, laughing, eating, sleeping, playing and relaxing. From your viewpoint the home offers all of the amenities and features you have been searching for. The house is in a great location, the price is right, what is not to love? You cannot picture yourself owning any other home. When buying a home, it will be of benefit to you to seek out information that may be in conflict with your point of view.

The psychological study stated “people are also more likely to expose themselves to opposing ideas when it is useful to them in some way.” Being exposed to an opposing idea or belief when buying a house should include having the house inspected. It will be the inspector’s job to step back and look at the house from a non-emotional point of view. The inspection may confirm your belief that the house is perfect or the inspection may provide you with information that clearly show the home is less than perfect.

Buying a house requires a second look. Make sure you always have the house inspected even when you believe there is no reason to.
